    Larus Novæ-Hollandiæ Stephens, 1826, New South Wales. Forms superspecies with L. hartlaubii and L. scopulinus, and all three sometimes treated as a single species. Morphometric analysis of skeletal characters links prtesent species consistently with L. maculipennis, L. serranus and L. cirrocephalus. Tasmanian birds sometimes separated as race gunni, but variation only clinal. Two subspecies recognized. (source: Handbook of the Birds of World)
