Description | These truly amazing birds are sometimes known locally in Trinidad as diablotin (pigeon French for "little devil"). Dunstan cave in the grounds of the Asa Wright Centre is the most accessible Oilbird colony in the world & a free guided trip to see them is part of the package for those who stay for three or more nights at the centre. Flash photography is not allowed in the grotto & so this image was taken at a very high ISO setting & slow shutter speed on a tripod by the light of the guide's hand-torch. I had to stand barefoot in the cold stream that flows through the grotto to take this image. I was able to alter the white balance in RAW conversion to compensate for the torchlight but decided to leave the red eye as it seems appropriate given the local name "Diablotin". Note the palm seeds that have germinated in the background (see text with the image below). (I loaded this image from my Pbase website but the EXIF data is missing. Image was taken on 19th May 2006 with a Canon 1D mkII + 500mm IS lens, tripod mounted without flash at f4, 1/15th sec, ISO 3200 using a small hand torch as sole light.). Framed by a friend. |
