Phylogeny: 

Taxonomy: Myzomela cineracea P. L. Sclater, 1879, New Britain. Forms a superspecies with M. blasii, M. albigula, M. eques and M. obscura. Often treated as conspecific with M. eques. Birds from Umboi, slightly larger (and male possibly slightly paler above) than those of New Britain, described as race rooki, but differences considered too slight to warrant recognition of geographical races. Primary rainforest, forest edge and tall secondary forest and regrowth, found in lowland alluvial rainforest and edge.
