Distinctively barred and streaked has powerfull legs and feet like Accipiter, but shorter wings. Juvenile slightly paler and more rufous, lacks mask and may have pale head.

Taxonomy:
- Megatriorchis doriae Salvadori and D'Albertis, 1875, Yule Island, New Guinea. Has frequently been merged into superficially similar genus Accipiter, but now considered part of old endemic Australasian clade, related instead to Erythrotriorchis and others (see page 55). - New Guinea; also recorded on Batanta I, off NW New Guinea.
lowland and hill rain forest. Monsoon forest and mangroves, also seen at interface between disturbed forest and secondary scrub. Occur from sea-level to 1650 m.
Little known, snatching small prey from outer foliage. Spends much time inside forast canopy.
