Lonchura hunsteini

Taxonomy: Donacicola hunsteini Finsch, 1886, New Ireland. Has been thought to form a superspecies, or to be conspecific, with L. forbesi. Race nigerrima sometimes considered a separate species. Pohnpei race minor, said to have been introduced in 1920s, but evidently endemic. Three subspecies recognized. (source: Handbook of the Birds of World)

- * minor ( Yamashina, 1931) - Pohnpei, in Caroline Is. * nigerrima ( Rothschild & E. J. O. Hartert, 1899) - New Hanover, in Bismarck Archipelago. * hunsteini ( Finsch, 1886) - New Ireland, in Bismarck Archipelago.
Their diet mainly consists of grass seeds and weeds, but they also have a fondness for insects.
