Taxonomy: Munia melaena P. L. Sclater, 1880, Kabbakadai, New Britain. Preliminary mitochondrial study indicated that this species is closest to L. forbesi. Two subspecies recognized. (source: Handbook of the Birds of World)
Subspecies and Distribution:
- * melaena ( P. L. Sclater, 1880) - New Britain, in Bismarck Archipelago. * bukaensis Restall, 1995 - Buka I (N of Bougainville I).
Their diet mainly consists of grass seeds and weeds, but they also have a fondness for insects.
